Azenshelby has this wonderful art where Vader met baby Luke, and ran away from the Empire.
Which means I get these AU ideas...
Second AU idea where Vader discovers Luke, and runs away from the Empire with his boy. Only this time, Bail Organa's agents find them.
I realized my comment on Azenshelby's art, made it sound like Vader left Luke in Palpatine's care, while he went and set up a place for Luke, with caretakers, and security. Then Vader tried to retrieve Luke from the Emperor, and was denied. So then Vader had to "steal" Luke back.
Which could also be a second AU. In old canon, aka Legends, Bail Organa offered sanctuary to Jedi on Alderaan. (I think Breha didn't exist then.)
So Vader flees with Luke. Bail's contacts send word about a rumor on why no one has seen Vader. So Bail speaks with Mon Mothra, and sends a few Alliance agents to try to track Vader. The offer- the Alliance will grant Vader refuge on Alderaan, provided he gives the Alliance information.
It's just that I have this image of Queen Breha, with attendants, and a couple Jedi guards. Queen Breha is sitting at a table with a few advisors, Alliance members, a doctor and therapist, and Vader, who has Luke sitting on his lap.
Luke is staring at the food. When a servant brings him a bowl of broth, he wails, "But I'm so hungry!" Luke really starts crying, Vader tries to shush him. Luke is giving a sad, sort of hopeless crying. One of the people at the table gets up, squats by Luke, takes his hands, and gently asks Luke what he has been eating. Vader feels guilty, and doesn't meet anyone's eyes.
Luke has been living off a low number of ration bars per day. The woman gently explains to crying Luke that his system would be overwhelmed by too much food, too soon.
The woman also informs Vader that they want both him and Luke to submit to medical exam and a psychiatric evaluation for Vader. A social worker will evaluate Vader's parenting, and give him advice.
Vader accepts. He doesn't have anywhere to go, and all his accounts have been sliced by Palpatine's agents, and emptied. He just wants to keep Luke with him.
A year later, Kenobi is visiting Bail, not on Alderaan. Bail is conference holo-ing Mon, Breha, and some other members of the Alliance.
Queen Breha is pleased to report that Vader has been cooperating. Davern has had some productive debriefings with Vader. The therapist has diagnosed Vader, and prescribed medication and therapy. The child services worker says that Vader is listening to her, and taking advice on Luke well.
Obi-Wan is not quite happy, he reminds everyone of the genocides that Vader participated in.
But Vader is the highest ranking defector they've had. The Alliance is quite happy to keep him hidden on Alderaan. Alliance security is already making plans to raid the Inquisitorius training program, with Vader's help. Plus, the Alliance now knows about several high level weapons projects of Palpatine's. This includes project "Stardust". They don't have plans for the Death Star, but Vader knows where to find the plans, who has access to them, and where to find Galen Erso.
